Probabilistic IDs (or Probabilistic Identifiers) are a method of identifying a user or device by analysing a wide range of anonymous behavioural and technical signals to infer a “more probable than not” connection. Instead of relying on a single, known identifier (like a login), this approach uses algorithms to link various data points—such as a shared IP address, location, and similar browsing patterns across a smartphone, laptop, and tablet—to build a probable user profile.
The accuracy of this method is strengthened by linking together profiles that share a collection of highly specific and consistent information (e.g., the same demographic data and interests), thereby distinguishing one user from another in a shared environment, like a household. The ultimate goal is to identify the same individual across multiple devices to understand their complete customer journey and optimise marketing efforts, based on a degree of certainty rather than absolute confirmation.
